The Constitution places the Chief justice at the head of the judiciary and the Supreme Court as the highest and final court of appeal.

Office of the Chief Justice

NATURE AND SCOPE

The Constitution places the Chief Justice at the head of the Judiciary. The nature of the functions of the Office includes judicial, legal, administrative and management.

1. Judicial functions

· Presiding in Supreme Court on hearing cases, appeals and reviews

· Sitting in the High Court as a Judge

· Presiding on High Court under Reciprocal Enforcement of Judgments Act

· Supervisory jurisdiction over Subordinate Courts

2. Legislative

· making rules and issuing orders that have the force of laws contained in the Constitution and other statutes

3. Administrative and Management

Formulation of administrative, management, judicial and enforcement policies;

Implement Policies, Strategic plans and programs

Mobilize, Manage and control resources

Management of courts, tribunals and financial matters

Assignment, transfer of judges and cases
